In recent years, the problem of black powder particles in natural gas pipelines has affected the safe and smooth operation of gas transmission pipelines. The detection of black powder particles in pipelines is the prerequisite and basis for the selection of filtration and separation devices in natural gas stations. In this paper, a unit and theoretical model for online detection of black powder particles in natural gas pipelines are proposed based on the principle of spectral extinction method. The model is based on the Mie scattering principle, with special consideration of the extinction effect of natural gas medium. The extinction coefficient of natural gas medium composed of 95% CH4+5% CO2 component is numerically calculated using Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy(DOAS). Field tests at natural gas stations show that the program can accurately and efficiently perform online detection of black powder particles in the gathering and transportation networks. The error in black powder particle size inversion is less than 10%, and the distribution of black powder particle size meets the Rosin-Rammle function distribution; the fluctuation error in online concentration results compared with the offline detection is within 4.7%. This study is the first to apply the spectral extinction method to online detection of natural gas black powder particles, and it holds promise for realizing continuous monitoring of black powder particles in natural gas pipelines in the future.
