Through the investigation of plant species and ecological types within 5 m of natural gas pipeline in Inner Mongolia,9 typical excavation sites were selected to study the influence of plant roots on the anticorrosive layer of natural gas pipeline. Among the 9 excavation sites,1 site with birch tree roots showed obvious indentation on the anticorrosive layer, while the other 8 sites had not yet caused any significant influence on the anticorrosive layer. Research results indicate that factors affecting the plant roots to the anticorrosive layer include tree species, diameter at breast height pipeline buried depth, relative distance between plants and pipeline, ecological type, and environment. Root growth characteristics vary significantly among different plant species. The closer to the pipeline and the shallower the pipeline buried depth, the greater the risk to the anticorrosive layer. The higher the moisture content, the more likely plant roots are to concentrate near ground surface. According to this research and analysis, plant-related risk classification and inspection risk catalogue specific to the Inner Mongolia region were developed to guide vegetation management and control measures and provide reference for the protection of corrosion control layer of pipelines.
