Gravel packing is a mainstream sand control technology widely used in unconsolidated sandstone oil and gas reservoirs worldwide to ensure normal production of oil and gas wells. To further improve the application effectiveness of this technology, laboratory experiments on gravel packing sand control were conducted using the controlled variable method on reservoir rock samples from an unconsolidated sandstone reservoir in Block S of a certain oilfield, based on the analysis of reservoir damage mechanisms. The influences of three key factors—production pressure differential, reservoir water content, and gravel particle size—on sand control effectiveness were analyzed. Results show that 250~425 mesh gravel exhibited the best overall performance under various operating conditions: effective permeation velocity reached 0.499~1.317 cm/s, permeability damage ratio was controlled within 5.3%~23.1%, and plugging area ratio was only 25.3%. Field application has verified the effectiveness of this technology, with oil production increased by 15% compared to expectations and sand content controlled below 0.03%. The research results provide a basis for optimizing gravel packing sand control design in unconsolidated sandstone reservoirs.
